“For Such a Time as This: Embracing Our Calling as Women in Mission Work”

Updated: Apr 26

I remember the first time someone called me a missionary. I chuckled a little, brushed it off. “Oh no,” I said, “I’m just helping out where I can.”  I wasn’t on foreign soil, and there were no tents or mosquito nets involved. I had simply brought meals to a young mother who’d just was having a hard time, I had helped with the church’s meals ministry to shut-ins, and organized a prayer circle for our women's ministry.

But friend, I’ve come to understand something important over the years: missionary work isn’t about where you go—it’s about what you do in His name.

The Mission Field Starts at Home

Jesus said, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8, NIV).

Did you notice where He starts? Jerusalem. Right where the disciples were standing. Right at home.

As women of faith, our calling often begins at the kitchen table, in the Sunday school room, or on the phone with someone who just needs to hear a kind word. We can be missionaries right where we are—walking in obedience, loving like Christ, and building His kingdom brick by brick, one meal, one prayer, one word of encouragement at a time.

Why Women Matter in God’s Mission

Throughout Scripture, God used women to carry out His plans. Think of Esther, placed in a palace for “such a time as this” (Esther 4:14). Or Priscilla, who taught alongside her husband Aquila and helped disciple Apollos (Acts 18:26). And the women who first discovered the empty tomb, entrusted with telling the disciples that Jesus had risen (Luke 24:1–10).

Women have always played a vital role in spreading the Gospel. We may not always carry a microphone or stand on a platform, but we carry compassion, wisdom, discernment, and strength—each a mighty tool in God’s hands.

Your Gifts Matter, Even If They Seem Small

Many of us have been guilty of thinking, “But I’m just good at organizing… I only bake cookies… I’m not a speaker or a teacher.” Sweet sister, let me gently remind you:

“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good” (1 Corinthians 12:7, NIV).

God gave you your talents on purpose. Whether it's hospitality, encouragement, administration, or crafting—you were gifted for a reason. And just because it comes easy doesn’t mean it’s insignificant. The enemy loves to whisper that our efforts are too small to matter. But God sees every stitch, every kind word, every open door. He multiplies the small things in ways we can’t always see.

Building on the Work of Others

One of the beautiful truths about God’s kingdom is this: we’re part of something bigger than ourselves.

Paul reminds us, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow” (1 Corinthians 3:6, NIV).

Sometimes we’re the planter. Sometimes the waterer. And sometimes we’re just pulling the weeds or holding the watering can. But each role is important. Women have a beautiful way of coming alongside others—supporting, nurturing, encouraging—quietly strengthening what’s already begun.

Be Encouraged, Dear Sister

If you’ve ever doubted your role in God’s work, let this be your encouragement:

You are needed. You are called. You are equipped.

You don’t have to cross an ocean to be a missionary. You just have to cross the street… or your own living room. God has already planted the seeds of ministry in your life—your gifts, your time, your relationships. Now is the time to step forward in faith.

So, bake those cookies. Write that card. Teach that Sunday school class. Pray for that neighbor. Organize that women’s gathering. Whatever you do, do it as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:23). Because you never know how God will use your “little” to make a big difference.

Here is a gift for you to conquer fear of being "in ministry." As a Christian, we are called to serve and God has given us the gifts He wants us to have to best serve the body of believers. If you have questions or would like to leave a comment, please leave me a message below.

CONFIDENT IN MY CALLING

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for making me just as I am—with the gifts, strengths, and passions You placed in me. Help me to see the ways You’ve called me to serve, whether in my home, my community, or across this nation. Give me the courage to say yes to You, even when I feel small. Remind me that in You, no act of love is ever wasted. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
